A skirmish on the front lawn
Posted by stephaniewm on December 15, 2010
Busy, busy, busy here keeping going in this weather. Another arctic spell coming.
The gas truck tried to get to our house today but couldn’t make it so I’m panicking because it’s about to run out which will mean no Aga, no hot water (haven’t used hot water for 3 weeks anyway to save on gas) and no warm kitchen. I’ve been spreading salt and sand and old fire ash over the icy strips up the hills for most of the day. 5 minutes after the grit/salt is thrown on you can hear a very satisfactory crackling underfoot. However it wasn’t enough to let the truck up. They should have sent a 7 tonne van apparently, not a 20 tonner or whatever size it was. A small one would have made it. If a smaller truck doesn’t come in the next two days before the weather deteriorates again I’m trying to work out how I will cook the Christmas turkey with no oven. We have an electric kettle, a microwave and Gavin bought us a little camping gas cooker. I’m thinking of buying an old, very old, gas cooker.
Angel disgraced herself yesterday..I had just finished giving the hens their lunch and was going back inside when I saw a skirmish on the front lawn (no grass showing of course, just snow). Then I realised that Jackie was bouncing along wagging his tail like mad and Angel had one of our large farmyard ducks by the side-feathers and was dragging her along the lawn.
I screamed at her, a blood curdling yell, and she dropped it and crouched down, tail between legs, in guilt. The duck limped off like a demented Jemima puddle duck to join its friends on Goose Green, seemingly none the worse for wear. But what a shock I got. Gus only heard my screams as he was up a ladder on the opposite hill trying to complete Peggy’s stable. I’ll try to attach a pic of stable half built. Very Andy Galsworthy. He won’t let anyone help him.
